& Joseph Barbera...

hey kids...

& we are very sad to have to tell you that Joseph Barbera (Hanna-Barbera), co-creator of the first cartoon aired in primetime (The Flintstones) among others, died yesterday at the age of 95 - we wish all his family & friends the best...

Bear, but not nekkid....

HolidayBear

here's a sketch from a bit before 3am this morning...

one of those commemorative holiday bears that they put out every year - Mr. 2004 right here, I believe...

stuff from around...

in addition to the aforementioned reforms that I eluded to the other day, I'm hoping to do more sharing of the great art/comic related stuff I find when I'm online...
so here goes...

hmmm, what can I do with the word Expectorate?

well, I've been sick, so I haven't been up on posting, even though I've been moving towards making twice a week the norm (news to you, I know)... I'm thinkin' Sundays & Wednesdays or Thursdays (Sunday being the firmer of the days).... any thoughts?...

Santa what?...

Santa

here's a nasty little Santa I sketched up several weeks ago... I hope he amuses others as much as he amuses me...

Ms. Marvel...

MsMarvel

hey kiddies, sorry about all the delay in scanning... I'm taking some new steps to help ensure that posting will happen more regularly - thanks for stickin' around amidst the madness...

but on to the image...
another Denny's sketch - this time of Ms. Marvel... as is, so far, & all that...

Dave Cockrum...

Dave Cockrum, comic artist on, among other things, the revitalization of the X-Men (shown above) & co-creator of Storm, Nightcrawler & Colossus (X-Men) passed away this morning - diabetes complications...
he was a wonderful creator & the void he leaves won't go unnoticed - definitely a great pro who left a big imprint... we feel for his wife & others close to him

New Head...er!

hey check out the header that Jiminy Krikit made for me!
Sometimes I just under estimate his Photoshop abilities.

attack of the clowns...

Joker (Contrast67)

the character for the drawing jam superhero thread at DrawingBoard.org this month is the Joker, so there it is...
this was done fairly quickly while I was fixing my dinner Friday night (11.10.06)...

It was the professor with the graphite in the restaurant...

Professor

well we got tagged by Debra to draw something post it up (which I for one should've got up faster), so the day after said tag, we were at that Carrow's in Monterey Park again with Dorothea's little cousin (age 3, I believe)... I open the sketchbook, & we proceed to ask her what I should draw... the Hulk was a suprising answer since this kid is afraid of the old gamma-radiated behemoth... but if you know me, you probably know I love the Hulk, so I wasn't really gonna argue - I've been wanting to draw him again anyway...
so, at the request of two different gals, here ya go...

(D's drawing should be up soon - she's been kinda swamped)

*oh yeah, I forgot - I gotta tag some folks (atleast 3)... it doesn't have to be a straight drawing - the stipulation seems to be that you did it by hand (something new) - then post it through scanning or taking a pic...
  • Dave (it's for your own good - you need to draw sucka!)
  • Kathy
  • Nicole
  • Ariana (you still drawin'?)
  • Courtney
  • Adam (does the new papi have time for quick sketches?)
  • Peter B. (you have more time this week anyways :J)

Patch-work...

Patch

I started this Patch drawing maybe a month (!) ago, & have been touching it a few times a week, mostly briefly... when I started, I had just finished reading the first two Essential Wolverine books with him masquerading as "Patch" in seedy Southeast Asian island, Madripoor... classic stuff...

this one is more for fun, so I haven't been rushing it - just been working on it in the background

24... no, not that "24"

I swear, I always find these things out like the day before or something...
today, it seems, is 24 Hour Comic Book Day... no, that's not a day when folks sit on their asses for 24-hours readin' comics (what, we need a special day for that?)... it's a challenge for comics creators to create a 24-page comic in one day... I think it's a neat idea, & one year, when I've got my crap together, I hope to participate...
so go check out the festivities at 24hourcomics.com

& meanwhile, check out this awesome sketch of Wonder Woman by Rich Friend:

Civil War: "I got two words for ya..."

being the comic book geek that I am, I think all the joke "Civil War" banners that keep floating around online are pretty funny - but I haven't seen any wrestling Civil War paraodies...
you know I couldn't resist...

My Reviews are up. . . YAY!!!!

Ok, so the new issue of Sequential Tart went live yesterday, and my reviews are in it!

I am so happy to be writing, and even happier that its about comics! So please do me a favor and go to www.sequentialtart.com and check out the Report card for Comics, and let me know what you think! The reviews are written under my real name, so that would be. . . Dorothea Cantero (for those of you who forgot already or don't know).

I'd really appreciate any feedback on this as this is my first attempt at doing ANY sort of writing in a long time. Thank you, please drive through.

Salt 'n Pepper's Lonely Condiment's Club Band...

salt 'n pepper's lonely condiment's club band

this was done yesterday afternoon at a Carrows in Monterey Park... just enough time to do this before the arrival of the pancakes...

so, I said I would put something up soon, & I would've gotten this up the other day... but yeah - I've been a little stressed out, what with having to get up at 6am & go to court tomorrow for bogus reasons (& me having a general distrust for "the system") ...

I'm workin' on a few things these days, so there's more on the way kiddies - as long as "the man" doesn't lock me up...

9.20.2006

son of a...

as it turns out, the last post ended up being an inadvertent hoax on the part of "World Famous"... hey, it seemed believable enough to me...

so anyways, enough about this mashup guy... why haven't you posted any stuff lately?

well, between my english class, the internet being down over here, & various other excuses (I know, I know), I "haven't gotten around to it" yet
I'll put something up soon, even if it's a work in progress or something - honest...

9.11.2006

sometimes, it sucks to love music...

in case the recent news about the music industry going after free guitar tablature web-sites wasn't disturbing enough, I found out today that DJ/mash-up artist World Famous Audio Hacker was arrested on September 3rd, after dj-ing that previous night into the morning...

what the hell? I swear, those riaa/music-suit-guys are really trying to take everyone down with 'em... I seriously see them as dying, decrepit creatures sensing that the end is near - more & more musicians are becoming aware that they do have options (poke around at Downhill Battle) - and newer, forward-thinking companies (Magnatune, anyone?) are seeing/innovating new avenues as well...

I would encourage everyone to go check out WFAH's web-site & spread this around as much as you can...

study, in a place of... er, study

Nalin, Apache Girl Study

this is a ball-point sketch/study done 8.21.06 (I told ya, the scanner-drivers...) while I was waiting for time to pass in the school library... it's from a Time Life: Old West book "The Indians" - I guess all the really whimsical titles were taken... the picture in the book was "Nalin, Apache Girl"...

yours truly...

self

here's a self-portrait from awhile back - easter morning 2004... I woke up feeling a certain way, & felt like I needed to capture that feeling - so, out came the digital camera (r.i.p.) & the graphite...
so why in blazes am I putting up a drawing from two years ago?... well, I just got a haircut the other day, & I more or less look like this again - plus I still like it... (& the scanner-drivers are missing)

Egypt & Joe Kubert...

Egyptian dude

so I came across a book that I hadn't seen in awhile, "Superheroes: Joe Kubert's Wonderful World of Comics"... flipping through it, I thought it'd be cool to go through some of the exercises, or what-have-you... so I'm at the section on Egypt, I go flip through some reference books & come up with two elements I thought I liked well enough to incorporate (I wanted something simpler than alot of Egyptian derived designs): the scarab (possibly on a belt or some sort of ornamental wear), & this mark under the left eye, which I was told is the mark of Horus...
after I did this sketch, the same person who told me it was the mark of Horus, told me it's only under the left eye... ah, well, I didn't know...
I still like it... leastways, enough to keep playing with it...

X-3

FamkeJeanGrayX3wp6

while the wallpapers that came out for X-3 were cool, I decided I wanted a different vibe - hence this little photoshop frankenstein was born...
so, while I can't do much else with this thing (other than use it), I can put it up so anyone else who wants to can use it...
just click on the image & you should be able to get the full size image at Flickr...

probably "point"

thank you for staying
while my heart is heavy
thank you for being here

old things tire me
and I find myself struggling
as other people's pain
becomes my own

I see words and I hear actions
but the two become confused

but right before I say I don't want anymore
I know it isn't true

and I know I don't know
how to love you like I should
at that point I'm closer
than I've ever been before

I don't know how to see you
could it be we don't know who you are
don't know if I should be here
until I remember where we are

"he writes? why?..."

so, I decided I needed a place to stick writings that were not just bitchy-jounal rants (hopefully) - I know, let's make it a whole creative/art journal-thing...

voila!
